State, church and primary schools

A few weeks after the Catholic bishops ciriticised the Minister Education for having the temerity to interest herself in curriculum matters in State owned and taxpayer funded schools (see above at www.iwh.ie/edu), Fintan O’Toole wrote a piece in The Irish Times that called for more state involvement in primary education. This idea was challenged by Seamus Mulconry, who later became Secretary General of the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association. I, in turn, took issue with him. The following was the result:
